Twelve subjects, each with the guides and outside links in one place

When you’re helping a parent, you rarely have one question. You start with is it time for home care and end up asking about Medicare, the house, and who has power of attorney. The topic pages are built for that. Each one collects everything on our site about one subject, then adds links to government agencies, nonprofits, and professional associations that are worth your time.

The twelve subjects are home care, assisted living, elder law, hospice, memory care, Medicare, financial planning, estate sales, realtors and downsizing, caregiver support, senior move management, and home safety.

A good way to use them: start with the subject that’s most urgent, read the guide at the top of the page, then open the outside links for the rules that matter where you live.

For anything that involves Illinois law, Medicaid, or a legal document, the topic page is a starting point. An elder law attorney or your local area agency on aging can confirm what applies to your family.

We write for adult children, mostly in their 40s, 50s, and early 60s, who live in Chicago’s Northwest Suburbs and are handling a parent’s care alongside a job and their own family. Every topic is chosen because families ask about it.

What’s the difference between a topic and a guide?

A guide walks you through one situation step by step. A topic page covers a whole subject and links to every guide and outside resource about it.
